THE FIVE AXIS MILLING MACHINE |
THE STRUCTURAL FOAM® In this new FB Design patent, the main structure is the base platform in fiberglass, injected with closed cells polyurethane foam (medium density 60÷65 kg/m3) and five longitudinal stiffeners attached both to the hull and to the cockpit floor. Thanks to a revolutionary system the Structural Foam® patent taken out by FB Design creates an unsinkable and very resistant hull that combines the longitudinal strength of the stringers with the high density foam for sandwich. This new technolgy is already well tested with the new multi-functional platform FB 38’ Stab SF (adopted by the Italian Coast Guard and many other military corps), the RIB 39’ SF, the RIB 42' SF, the FB 43' SF and the new FB 41' SF. |

FB THROTTLES FB Throttles are built using the most reliable electronic components. Main characteristics is the separation of engines accelerator and gear control functions, with mechanical protection of unintentional gear engagement. Synchro and troll modalities and multiple stations control are additional features of this unit, that can be fully integrated with 3TAB® system control. |
3TAB® 3TAB® is an automatic system for the control of up to 3 trim tabs units, based on speed measured by a dedicated high frequency GPS sensor. The ideal waterline at that speed is obtained by independent movement of side and central trim tabs. Unit can be programmed to incorporate an infinity of variables. The system can also be disabled and trim tabs just controlled manually. The 3TAB system is currently in use on the FB 43' SF. |
FB Design is a company established in 1971 by Fabio Buzzi, mechanical engineer and offshore pilot, with the purpose of studying and building high performance motor boats as well as marine transmissions known as Trimax drives, now produced in partnership with the German ZF Corporation. After 30 years in business the boatyard and its R&D department have grown together and the firm continues to develop more and more sophisticated new products.
For years the main activity of the company was the competition. In more than 40 years of activity FB Design has won a total of 52 World Championships, the Harmsworth Trophy 7 times (1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2010) and have set 56 world speed records established in all existing classes, both UIM and APBA in US.
Even if FB Design production is now mainly oriented to the military, the company is still making very fast leisure boats for very demanding customers that want at the same time very high performances and reliability.
Nowadays the company occupies a 12000 sqm site, complete with modern workshops for all phases of production where 40 technicians look after the production of prototypes, racing, and high performance patrol crafts. |
FB Design develops new crafts and submits them to the stress cycle of offshore racing and winning without charging experimental design costs to the customer.
All the hulls, drives and fittings are always tested in the top racing and endurance contests, which are a demanding proving ground that ensures the highest quality.
FB Design is the only yard in the world whose craft have set world endurance and speed records in every existing class, with all types of hulls.
At present the main thrust of FB Design’s activity is devoted to the construction of high speed patrol boats on behalf of many naval organisations all over the world, such as the Italian "Guardia di Finanza" and Coast Guard, as well as the South African and Greek special forces, the Turkish Customs and the Hong Kong anti terrorism Police and Custom units. |

MOREGATTO TRIAL BASE | ||
"To create the first and only Center in Italy fully dedicated to the nautical research"; around this idea by Fabio Buzzi happened the lucky meeting of capable men. Public Administration, Ecology and Technological Development have found the best possible intend in order to harmonize demands which are usually in conflict. With appropriate colors and minimalist structures, perfectly set in the wild natural setting of the mountains, which plunge "in that branch of the lake of Como", Moregatto is ready to fulfill its new role: research. Scientific methodology requires constancy of the test conditions, which the lake is capable of during every season of the year. Further more, discretion is an important requirement and the secluded place suits this purpose, in perfect harmony with the varied wildlife that enrich the environment.

Fabio Buzzi was born in Lecco in 1943, and is descendent from a family tied for centuries to the art of building and design. His powerboat competition career started in 1960 and he graduated in mechanical engineering in 1971 from the Polytechnical University of Turin where he took a degree in mechanical engineering with a thesis on a self-constructed vehicle. Fabio Buzzi founded his industrial activity in the boating sector in 1972, under the FB Design trademark.
Fabio Buzzi began to compete in offshore racing in 1978, when he won the Italian and European Class 3 Championships. The following year he set the world speed record for diesel boats using a VM engine at a top speed of 191.58 km/h.
In 1986 he designed the Seatek engine, founding this company to produce diesel engines with a very high performance. With this engine in 1988 he became Italian, European and World Champion of the Open class.
FB Design boats have won a total of 52 World Championships, the Harmsworth Trophy 7 times and have set 40 world speed records. Buzzi himself has won 10 World Championships.
In 1992, using a Seatek-powered boat he again succeeded in beating the diesel record at the speed of 252 Km/h.
In 2004 Fabio Buzzi is again world champion of P classes in Key West, wins the Harmsworth Trophy, set two long distance records (Venice-Montecarlo and Tampa-Miami) and wins the Pavia-Venezia race at an average speed of 198 km/h with a hydroplane powered by a gas turbine, at the respectable age of 61!
In 2008 FB won the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes of 182 miles, with the restored Cesa 1882 / Red FPT, and he completed the race in 2h 18' 5' at an average speed of 91 mph.
In 2010 Red FPT (with Fabio Buzzi, Emilio Riganti and Simon Powell) won both heat 1 "Cowes 100" and heat 2 "Cowes-Torquay-Cowes" of the UIM Marathon World Cup races.
In 2012 he sets a NEW LONG DISTANCE RECORD: NEW YORK-BERMUDA with FB Design's new FB 41' SF. The distance of 684 nm was run in 17h 06' at an average speed of 40 knots.

Probably the most famous boat designed by Fabio Buzzi is CESA 1882. Completely restored in 2006, this glorious monohull is again racing with the dress of Red FPT. |
This incredible mono hull was born from a project that went wrong: Nitro, of 1985, was a losing boat for the old same reason: it was too heavy! |
In 1988 the boat got its most celebrated name: CESA 1882, after the sponsor, who was a silver jeweler. During that season it won more than every other boat in the world: 17 consecutive podiums, with 3 second places and 14 first places. It's not only Italian, European and World Champion for the U.I.M., but also, in November, World Champion for the A.P.B.A. in Key West and winner of the Miami-Nassau-Miami. |
Then it's the beginning of the dark ages: the boat is lost in some american shipyard, where the english pilot Drew Langdon re-discovers it and decides to bring it back home. |
Since 1994 the GRAN ARGENTINA is three times Superboat World Champion and universally acknowledged as the fastest monohull in the world. This is a boat for the very select few, as Daniel Scioli (Vice President of Argentina from 2003 to 2007 and current Governor of Buenos Aires Province) the most regular driver, 3 times winner of World Champion Superboat USA and 4 europeans championships. |
The transformation of la “Gran Argentina” was mainly done in 2000, transforming the boat into long distance record setter.
The main modifications were done around the central cockpit that now is for 4 places, with the rear open, and four Tecno G10 seats, all with their own instrumentation, and a single radar is also fitted with two GPS. A new front tank is now extending the range in order to be able to go from Miami to Nassau and back without any refuelling. Gran Trimax set the Miami-Nassau-Miami record at 100 MPH average speed.
In 2004 FB Design has deeply changed the characteristics of this 55’ boat. As usual U.I.M. has changed the rules banding four engines boats, so the four Seatek have been removed and at their place there are now two Isotta Fraschini 1312 V12, 20 litres engine, rated at 1300 Hp. The range also is extended with two new rubber tanks, for a total of 4200 litres and a range of 70 kn of over 600 nm. |
In 2004 Fabio Buzzi, with this same mono-hull renamed as Sony, established the new world record in the circumnavigation of the Italian peninsula from Venice to Monaco (1122 nautical miles) with the smashing time of 23h 55’ 51’’ at an average speed of 47 knots (87 km/h).
In the same year, after racing in a three race format World Championship Race in Key West and winning the title of World Champion in his class, Fabio Buzzi placed a new Tampa-Miami long distance record in 3h 47’ 30’’.
La Gran Argentina raced again in 2010 in the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race with the new name and dress of Silicon Fire, and arrived second after the new restored Cesa 1882. |
The FB 55' made by FB design is a high-speed interceptor used by many military corps, and it's actually based on the superboat racing boat "La Gran Argentina". Many of these models are currently in use with the Hong Kong Police and Customs and with the Italian Guardia di Finanza.
